Scary wordmarks from the 80s

The Eighties was a great time for horror movies, so many awesome films were made that decade, and I pretty much saw them all, or at least it felt that way. I loved that genre in my youth, so I felt very nostalgic when I saw this collection of title logos from horror movie posters.

Designer Christian Annyas has gathered together a fine hoard of 1980’s horror movie poster logos and typography, some of which can be seen below. He also makes a great point about how the use of custom wordmarks has dwindled since back then, with so many studios instead opting for generic typefaces, such as Trajan.

Looking back at these classics from the Eighties, it does seem a shame that studios are now rarely willing to invest in creating unique wordmarks that we’ll be able to look back on appreciatively in the future.
